Samhain was exorcised back into Hell by Sam Winchester over three years ago. However, the demon was not properly locked away. (The two witches who performed rituals to free Samhain needed to do so because of Samhain's "cage". They had to break the seals that binded him.) It took a while, but Samhain was able to claw his way out. Now that he's topside, he's up for some mischief.
With no plan particular in mind yet, (and not quite as strong as he is on October 31st) this ancient demon will be roaming graveyards and other places of the dead, looking to find a way to raise a small army. He may need to perform a spell or two to increase his power so he can properly disturb the spirits, and bodies, of the dead.
For now, Samhain will have a few open threads. No attacks or anything yet. But once those are over (and hunters/angels/other species have realized something strange is going on due to influxes of spirit/undead activity in cemeteries) Samhain will strike hard and fast.
As far as alliances go with him...we'll see. He'd probably be more open to creatures like ghouls or vampires (etc.) than anything else. But, again, we'll see.
